Course description: What models have existed historically and exist currently outside the public school system and outside western, industrialized societies?
In this class, we’ll explore some histories, theories and analyses of different models including those that evolved in response to public schools (see title). Who is being served in each?
We intend to emphasize local models with visits to schools and organizations and invite guests who have firsthand experience with some of these models, such as Second Foundation School, Jane Addams School for Democracy, the Resource Center of the Americas, the Bat Annex and others.
What kinds of schools might be possible here/now? We’ll look at programs for both youth and adults.
In the spirit of popular education, we expect that the learning will be generated by the people in the class rather than from the top down. As facilitators, we welcome everyone’s expertise and direction.
Class Dates/Time: Saturdays, 4-6pm through December 13th. No class on Saturday, November 29th.
Place: 1921 Elliot Ave, Minneapolis EXCEPT on October 18th when we will have class at 3117 Oakland Ave, Minneapolis
Class size: Minimum 3, the more the merrier!
What experience do you bring to this class?
Both facilitators have experience with mainstream and alternative schools and are interested in learning more about better ways of learning.
