Course description:
Have you ever been asked to facilitate or lead a group or conversation and hadn’t really a clue where to start? Have you been winging it ever since?
This course will be a learning lab on participatory leadership skills; participants are encouraged to bring their leadership and facilitation projects to work on and share with the class. Each participant will be expected to
practice facilitation during class and find a meaningful application outside of class.
We will learn how to design a meeting or series of meetings using a proven methodology used around the world in community development, corporate strategic planning, community activism and advocacy, and citizen engagement. We’ll learn how to design and facilitate Focused Conversations, Consensus Workshops, short term action planning, stakeholder engagement, and much more. The group’s projects and aspirations will provide direction for the course. We will work with free materials from GoodWorkTools.com and be co-developers in new tools and resources to share with the world.
Participatory leadership skills are desperately needed to overcome the global challenges we face; this course will help people explore the role of a facilitative leader and develop concrete skills for building a better
world.
Participants in this 10 session course will learn, explore and develop participatory facilitation skills and tools.
Participation is limited to 20 people, approximately 10 with association to Macalester and 10 connected to
community organization who cannot afford regular facilitation courses.
Participants should have a hard copy of the Participatory Skills Manual downloadable for free at
www.GoodWorkTools.com
It is also recommended that participants purchase a stickywall from www.GoodWorkTools.com to support their skill development. A class discount will be available. Participants will want to develop their facilitation
kit, which we’ll discuss at various points during the course.
