Course description:
This course is designed for those with experience and background in writing, reading, and workshopping poetry who want to hone their skills and be part of the collective workshop process. We will focus on critical reading and practice of poetic craft. We will be reading and discussing poetic texts (essays and verse) that engage with specific formal writing elements, including but not limited to detail & image, metaphor, syntax, diction & punctuation, tone, and line & stanza.
Our time will be divided between these discussions and in-class writing as well as workshops of our writing. This course is an opportunity to commit time and thought to improving your writing, and aims to incite greater curiosity towards creative expression in general. We will strive for an atmosphere of mutual respect so all will feel free to present their work.
As a side note—this course will focus more on modern/contemporary writers (20th/21st century) rather than a broader temporal and more “canonical” set. Please email me with any questions about the course.
Class Time: Monday Evening, 7-9:30pm
Class Dates: Starting 09/22, and continuing each week until 11/24 (some dates may be subject to change)
Place: TBD
Class size: Minimum ____3_____ Maximum ____16_____
What experience do you bring to this class?
I have been a student of creative writing for some time, as well as having assistant taught a creative writing seminar at a summer program for highschool students. I have had several pieces appear in various student lit magazines, and I have worked on the editorial board for various student publications for many years. I am excited at the opportunity to work with other experienced writers who want to be more active with their writing.
