Self Defense for Gentle People
Name of facilitator: Michael Andregg
Address: University of St. Thomas
E-mail: mmandregg@stthomas.edu Phone: 651-962-5907
Course description: This is a modified short course which focuses on learning ten specific Hap Ki Do techniques for dealing with grabs and the most elementary punching and kicking. More important is cultivating situational awareness and going through simulations of assault situations to learn warning signs of danger and the entire range of possible responses which include many options other than the last resort of fighting some moron twice your size. It is always better to ‘not be there’ if danger comes. But if you must fight, we know the most effective options for any body and mind (they vary a lot).
Class Time: 6:30 – 8:30 pm
Class Dates: Thursday evenings, Oct. 23, 30 and Nov. 6 & 13.
Place: McCarthy Gym at the University of St. Thomas, 150 yards west of Cretin and Grand Aves
in St. Paul.

What experience do you bring to this class? I have taught martial arts for 30 years privately, at 3 universities, and to hundreds of ROTC cadets as well as specialty audiences (like non-violent restraints for institutional staff, and specialized courses on self defense against sexual assault). In my old age I am more interested in helping the most gentle people gain the self confidence and freedoms martial art can advance than the young warriors although I still help them from time to time as well. 2 black belts.
