Course description: This course is designed as a preparatory course for building an Art Shanty on Medicine Lake this winter. A spin-off of the acclaimed ‘Radical Mapping’ course offered last session, this fall’s ‘Radical Mapping on Ice’ will bring maps and new concepts of mapping out of the classroom and to the people. The first weeks of the session will be brainstorming a mapping shanty, developing curriculum/maps, and writing a proposal to the Art Shanty organization for grant funding. There will be a break mid-session, and then the course will resume in mid-November with the construction of the shanty and the Art Shanty event (weekends, Jan10-Feb14). Not everyone will be required to attend at any given time. While on the ice, participants will spend time in the Mapping Shanty working with the public, other artists, and each other to make, distribute and explore maps. This will be a collaborative process, with each person sharing their own skills. Construction/Building experience helpful but not necessary. Must be comfortable working in low temperatures.
